Porta Nuova o Moedina Coeli
Porta Nuova or Moedina Coeli is a historical landmark located in the municipality of Orbetello. It was built on top of a pre-existing medieval gate, known as Porta a Terreno, which was later renamed Porta Nouva. In 1544, the military architect Anton Maria Lari was commissioned by the Republic of Siena to renovate the fortifications of Orbetello.
Another significant renovation took place in 1642, and in 1648, the gate was further fortified by Gatta with the addition of a lower tenaille. However, the current appearance of the gate is a result of the reconstruction carried out in 1697 during the reign of Carlo II and the viceroy of Naples, Moedina Coeli. A plaque beneath the Spanish coat of arms on the front of the gate confirms this, leading to its name Porta Nuova or Moedina Coeli.
This gate was also equipped with barracks for the garrison and adorned with Spanish heraldry. Additionally, a statue of San Biagio was placed on the front facing the city, adding to its historical and cultural significance.
Porta Nuova or Moedina Coeli serves as a testament to the rich history and architectural heritage of Orbetello. Visitors can admire the craftsmanship and historical significance of this gate, which has stood the test of time and witnessed centuries of history unfold in the charming town of Orbetello.
